Measuring Your Laptop before Buying a Bag

A lot of times, when people shop for a laptop bag or backpack, they seem unsure of the laptop’s dimensions. So, this article is for people to help them to choose the right backpack or bag for their laptop.

a.     Do you know that laptop sizes are published in diameters?

Before we get into the nitty gritty of laptop sizes, let’s clear one thing out. When brands/companies publish laptop sizes, they are referring to the diameter of the laptop’s screen. So if you hear of a 15 inches or 16 inches laptop, they are all referring to the diameter of the laptop’s screen.

b.     Confusing laptop diameter with width

So, here’s where the confusion comes from. A lot of customers - when they are looking for laptop bags or backpacks for themselves, they confuse the laptop’s diameter with its width. A laptop’s diameter is larger than its width. So, next time, before you decide to go out for shopping for a laptop bag, measure your laptop’s width and depth and jot it down first.

For example, the Apple MacBook Air that is known as the 13 inches computer screen size has a width of 11.97 inches, depth of 8.46 inches, and a screen diameter of 13.6 inches.

Laptop sizes in width, depth and diameter

Laptop sizes can vary from 11 to 18 inches. Ultra-portable laptops can size from 11 to 12 inches. Thin and light laptops can range from 13 to14 inches.  Standard/mainstream laptops can range from 15 to 16 inches. Large screen/desktop replacement laptops can size from 17 to 18 inches. And let’s remember these are all screen diameter sizes!

So if you are eyeing a bag or backpack with laptop compartment in it, remember to jot down your laptop’s width and depth. And if you don’t want to do that. Remember to measure the laptop compartment diagonally to ensure that it matches with your laptop.
